CHALLENGE:

HBO was looking to rebrand their HBO Boxing segment to attract the new age of sports fans. Their original content was outdated, resembling early 1990’s design of Sepia Backgrounds, Bright Serif Type and Grainy Finishes. I was given the challenge of bringing the program’s key art and assets into the 21st century to increase engagement & awareness of the sport.

SOLUTION:

The redesign of HBO Boxing is darker and moody, using lower saturation visuals with loud text on top. Trade Gothic Bold acts as a callout to each asset, allowing bold type to speak for each segment, but not get in the way of the action. This design was able to be templated in overlays and effects so that it can be a modular design across all mediums. I created an asset execution system within Photoshop and After Effects to make motion graphics and photo edits so our team of designers could quickly output assets with the new branding without messing with their settings.

BEYOND LIVE EVENTS:

Not only was I updating the branding, but managing the execution of the assets pre, during and post events. Social media posts were created and posted weeks prior to the fight to build hype around the boxing community. During the events, the HBO Boxing social pages would light up with celebrities, veterans and athletes placing their bets on the results of the fight . Real time images and videos from sidelines of the event were sent to myself to create all the content to keep the social media and web channels up to date with all the blows from the fight.

THE FINAL ROUND OF HBO BOXING:

I was able to go the distance with HBO Boxing, all the way until the end. On December 6th, 2018, HBO Boxing had it’s last fight and ended their 45 year run of amazing entertainment. As a boxing fan, I was sad to see it go, but was able to witness such great moments in the sport so close to the action.
